  • Chess SuperNationals Chess Tournament

April 16, 2009

In late February, D.W. Daniel High School won their second consecutive South Carolina State Championship in Scholastic Chess. Over Spring Break, representatives of the team including Michael Lauria, Kenzie Moore, Zachary Templeton, Arjun Grover, Jonathan Sarasua, Paul Dutkiewicz and Sam Coopercompeted in the the 2009 SuperNationals Scholastic Chess Tournament held in Nashville, Tennessee. There were approximately 5400 players and hundreds of teams participating, representing 45 states in the SuperNationals which are held only once every four years.  The competition was tremendous but Daniel’s Chess Team held their own placing 24th in the nation. Congratulations!

  • Daniel Dodds and Kristen Snowdeal to Represent South Carolina at the Denker and Polgar

The 2009 South Carolina Scholastic Championships were held in Columbia, S.C., on Saturday, February 28. Ninety-two students participated, with 43 in the Elementary School Section, 20 in the Middle School Section, and 29 in the High School Section. The competition was a five-round, Swiss.

 

Daniel Dodds (1760), an 11th grade home-schooled student, won the High School Section with a perfect score of 5.0. He will represent the state in the '09 Denker National Tournament of High School Champions. Here is one of his wins:

 

Daniel Junh Lee won the Middle School title, scoring 4.5.

 

Kevis Tsao and Mowei "Tiger" Tang tied for first in the Elementary School section, each scoring 5.0.

 

Kristen Snowdeal of Spring Valley High School will represent the state at the '09 GM Susan Polgar National Invitational Tournament for Girls.

 

In team competition, D.W.DanielHigh School took first place with 14.5 points, R.C.EdwardsMiddle School took first place with 15.5 points, and ClemsonElementary School took first with 17.0 points.
