Page history last edited by Mike Games 15 years, 3 months ago

December 2008 - Daniel Dodds is #95 in the 17 Age Group

On September 8 2008 Daniel Dodds won the Governors school tournament.

Daniel is 17 years old, in eleventh grade, is homeschooled, and favorite sport is track and field “Usain Bolt was amazing!”

Q:  How did you first get started playing chess?

I started chess about three years ago (2005) when we got a software program called "chessmaster 9000" it was so interesting! After a few hours playing I was addicted and eventually started playing online and progressed to join chess club and then started playing tourneys.

Q:  What do you most like about chess?

What I like about chess is the depth; you can play 10 thousand games and never play the same exact position twice! Also you always have the opportunity for a second chance, if you play badly in the tourney no worries, work hard improve and you can do better next time. But my favorite thing about chess is it’s a heckuva lot of fun! And there are so many friendly people; we are bound by the same addiction!

Q:  What don’t you like most about chess?

What I don’t like is how some people take the game WAY too seriously, it’s an awesome game but it’s a game; if you can’t enjoy it don’t play. Some people might seriously enjoy studying seriously and digging deep into a position but if you're not enjoying then what’s the point?

Q:  What chess goals do you have?

My goals are simple: have fun, make friends and play well! I don’t care about rating too much, it would be cool to eventually be over 2000 but it’s ok if I don't.

Q:  What is chess competition to you?

Competition is the fuel that drives us forward, that forces us to the next level, and this is especially true with chess! Chess is a cutthroat brutal game, a violent beautiful symphony of tactics, strategy, and ideas, chess is a mind battle, it may look calm and serene on the outside but both players are brimming with the desire to crush their adversaries!

Q:  What did you improve and how much study/practice time?

To be honest most of my improvement has come from playing online. I don’t really study that often, actually I can count the number of chess books I’ve seriously studied with one hand. At my peak I played maybe 2-3 hours a day, this isn't the best approach to progress to the next level but it's a lot of fun! Forget playing computers playing humans is way better practice.
